In recent weeks, there’s been a lot of talk about the return of British sitcom, Gavin & Stacey over a year and a half since it came to an end. But will we be seeing more from the BAFTA-winning programme? If so, what will happen in it?
Speaking about the sitcom’s return, The Daily Mail reported that co-writer and star, James Corden, said: “It would be a crime not to, it’s a great show. Writing with Ruth [Jones] is a gift, I definitely plan on doing some more.”
However, James Corden, who is currently appearing on Broadway in One Man, Two Guvnors later tweeted: “Getting loads of messages about a Gavin and Staceyspecial. Im sorry to say there are no plans right now im afraid, but maybe one day! [sic]”
Also speaking about the programme’s return, Joanna Page told Digital Spy that she doesn’t think we will be seeing Gavin & Stacey on our screens again.
She said: “When we all finished the third series, we were happy it ended because it was nice to move on to other things. It was nice to finish it with people still really enjoying it.”
She continued: “I think everyone is so busy now and we’re off doing our own things. It would be a nightmare trying to get everyone back together again. So I don’t think there will be another one.”
The third series of Gavin & Stacey concluded on January 1st, 2010, with Smithy living in Barry with Nessa (Ruth Jones) and their son, Neil, while Stacey was heavily pregnant with Gavin’s (Matthew Horne) child.
If a new series or one-off special of the sitcom was to be written, what would happen in it? One route the sitcom could go down is one similar to The Inbetweeners with a feature-length film, possibly set abroad.
This idea would be backed by Joanna Page, who previously told OK magazine that she would love to see the cast of Gavin & Stacey film in Spain. She said: “I’d love to do a special abroad, somewhere hot.
“Two weeks filming in Spain would be brilliant and just meeting everybody again and having a laugh – purely for that. But I don’t think it’ll be for years and years.”
Alternatively, another series or one-off special of the sitcom could see the birth of Gavin and Stacey’s child. We’ve already seen them get together, get married and overcome a number of problems, so seeing how they cope as parents would make for entertaining viewing.
Likewise, it would be interesting to see how Nessa and Smithy’s relationship develops. Despite the fact there is a definite attraction between the two, they haven’t particularly shown it throughout the programme. Would their son bring them closer together?
While the return of Gavin & Stacey is no certainty, there is still hope for fans of the programme, who should certainly keep their fingers crossed for another instalment.
