On Sunday, October 6th, 2013, “Downton Abbey” viewers sat down in front of their television for a quiet night in.
Weirdly, a message broadcast before the programme warned viewers that the episode contained scenes that some viewers may find “disturbing”.
The disturbing scene turned out to be a rape, as users flocked to Twitter to react to the scene:
The rape scene in Downton Abbey has shocked me to the core, I was looking for mediocre to poor period drama nothing mentally scaring

Thanks Downton Abbey and ITV for showing that rape – endemic, under-reported + under-punished in a victim-blaming society – as entertainment

#DowntonAbbey OMG. I am absolutely shocked. I was not expecting the rape. I have been left so unnerved I’ve have had a whiskey. Awful.

NOT what I was expecting from #DowntonAbbey on a Sunday evening. Now I feel horrible and frankly, I’m not impressed with the rape storyline.
